Day Counter for Residential Status Tracking
As discussed in our earlier note on managing tax residency in times of conflict, residential status under Indian tax law can turn on something deceptively simple: the number of days spent in India—not only during the current financial year, but also across preceding years.
For frequent travellers, NRIs and globally mobile families, reconstructing these movements at the end of the year from passport stamps, tickets and emails can be both tedious and unreliable. We have therefore created a travel-day tracker that allows users to record their trips across multiple financial years and maintain a consolidated year-wise record of their presence in India and overseas.
The tool provides an export showing the total number of days for each year, which can be used to carry out a preliminary review of residential status or shared with your Chartered Accountant for a more detailed assessment. It also creates a useful contemporaneous travel record, particularly where the cumulative day-count tests under Indian tax law may become relevant.
The tool is intended to organise the underlying travel data; it does not, by itself, determine residential status. The final position may depend on citizenship, the purpose of travel, Indian-source income, earlier years’ residency, deemed-residency provisions and applicable tax treaties. Where your day count is close to a statutory threshold, or your circumstances are unusual, professional review remains essential.
